What better way to spend Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball than with everyone wearing the number 42 and a young rookie sensation getting a huge deal? Detroit Tigers’ twenty-one-year-old shortstop, Kevin McGonigle, might want to get familiar with the city he will call home for the next 8 years.
The highly regarded prospect signed an 8-year deal worth $150 million on Wednesday, after only seventeen career games. What does this mean for the future of the Detroit Tigers? How does this affect the franchise? Why did the Tigers decide to make this move right now?
Does the Signing of McGonigle Make Sense?
Shortly put, absolutely, the move makes sense. Going into the 2026 MLB season, Kevin McGonigle was ranked as the number two prospect in all of baseball, only behind Pittsburgh’s Konnor Griffin. Last week, the baseball world witnessed Griffin receiving a historic 9-year deal worth $140 million with the frugal Pirates.
This time it was McGonigle’s turn! The Detroit Tigers did their best to one-up the “Buccos” by giving their rookie 10 million more, but unfortunately for one less year. Although the shortstop has only 61 career at-bats at the time of the extension, it’s an exciting time to be a Tigers fan!
In his short MLB career so far, “KMG” has hit over .300 with an OPS of .909. The rookie has been one of the best and most consistent hitters in Detroit’s lineup so far in the early season. This is after he was determined to make the big club out of Spring Training. The early success is giving Tigers fans hope and an early buzz to the season.
Why Do the Deal Now?
Scott Harris and the organization are obviously thrilled about the production out of their young shortstop so far. But why not hold off until later to extend their prospect? Well, they say there is no time like the present, and this philosophy stands true in this case. The Tigers have team control over their 2023 draft pick for the next six years.
Signing him now postpones his opportunity to hit free agency for an additional two years. McGonigle will be 30 years old when he hits the open market. Still, the question comes up, why extend him at this moment? Think about it. If McGonigle continues to rake in the numbers at the plate, his driving price goes up with every plate appearance.
Number 7 made the jump from AA to the Majors, skipping a tenure in Toledo, and so far, he has proven that he belongs in the big leagues. There is always a risk with signing an unproven player to a long-term deal, but the Tigers feel like, at the end of this contract, they will get a steal out of the deal.
They say you can never predict baseball, but with McGonigle’s productive plate appearances, discipline, and knack to put the ball in play, this could be a hell of a deal. We will see if the new CBA negotiations next year will affect this signing in any way, but we should see him in the old English D for years to come.
Final Thoughts
Tigers fans have been begging Chris Illitch and Scott Harris to spend money and to prove to the city that they are dedicated to winning. This is a move in the right direction! Harris claimed they would spend “when the time is right.” It’s looking like the right time is now.
This move could also prove to back-to-back Cy Young Winner, Tarik Skubal, that they want to put together a winning team. After the Framber Valdez deal and now this one, could we see Skubal getting a half-billion-dollar contract? Probably, but most likely not here in Detroit. For now, we have our potential superstar locked up for nearly a decade! Well played, Tigers!
