What up Doe? Every year on March 13th, the people of Detroit and the surrounding suburbs celebrate the city’s greatness. The citizens of the Motor City take a lot of pride in coming from a hard, tough, blue-collar working-class area. We carry ourselves with a chip on our shoulder, a kind of grit that is unique to our home.
There is a certain respect people from Detroit receive from others who don’t know the culture or aren’t from here. We have a certain swag that represents the grind of the city. Today, we celebrate the heart and soul of the beautiful state of Michigan.
Welcome to Detroit City
Detroit is a proud, hardworking city that may not get the correct representation worldwide. Nine times out of ten, the city is depicted as a cold, dark, and violent place that will have you looking over your shoulder down every block. Although some of that may be true in “The D,” we have sunny days too.
The resurgence of Downtown has the whole city buzzing! Whether you’re tailgating at Eastern Market, vibing in Hart Plaza for Movement, or trying to hit big at one of the casinos, the 313 has something for everyone. Even if you wanted to take a look at our neighbors to the north, “Ay,” we have a fantastic riverwalk. Luckily, we don’t have to build a wall for our border, but there could be a few bodies in our river.
All four teams are now in Hockeytown’s city limits, after the Pistons moved to Little Caesars Arena. And don’t look now, they are back on top of the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Take a short drive down Fisher Service Dr., and turn on Brush, and you’ll run right into Comerica Park and Ford Field. If it’s the roar of the crowd after a Magglio home run to send the Tigers to the World Series or decades of the Lions losing, the loyalty of the fans is unmatched. Want to capture the moment in time? Go to the burbs to Rochester Hills, have Nate hook you up at Noetic Tattoo. The best up-and-coming artist in Metro Detroit!
Detroit Vs Everybody
The saying says it all! Detroit is built “Ford Tough!” Whether it’s the Big 3, the original Sheik, or George “The Animal” Steele, the city embraces the definition of toughness. If you’re a fan of Aretha Franklin, you’d better “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” the place she called home. The birthplace of Motown Records and some of the most influential musicians in history!
Here’s a piece of advice: if you’re a rapper and an outsider, make sure you make a visit to Trick Trick for the “No Fly Zone” rules and regulations. If you’re not an up-and-comer like TeaTheMonster or an established star like Big Sean, sorry not sorry, but “we don’t f*** with youuuu!” Anyways, let’s get back to the positives, shall we!
You can still visit Mom’s Spaghetti (even if there’s vomit on your sweater already) or grab a coney dog and cruise down 8 Mile, while bumping your favorite Eminem song. Thank God it’s not the night before Halloween, because D12 won’t help you on Devil’s Night. Although that would be a great time to grab a Faygo, some Lays Potato Chips, and paint your face like the Insane Clown Posse.
Final Thoughts
So, as you fill up the tank of your muscle car, cruising down Woodward to the Fox Theatre, all we ask is that you put some respect on our city! We may not be the flashiest, the richest, the warmest city in the world, but the D has the vibe! We are a proud city that works hard and plays hard. The grit and willingness to fight for that old English D gives us the moniker that we all live by. “Detroit vs Everybody” isn’t just a saying, it’s a lifestyle!
