Ahhh, doesn’t it feel like Y2K again? Seeing the Scary Movie franchise back in the originators’ rightful hands feels so good. Scary Movie 6 is now set to drop this June, twenty-six years after the original parody, comedic classic. The Wayans Brothers have retained full control over the film series, and the hype is real.
Shawn, Marlon, and most of the original cast are back for the first time since the first sequel, Scary Movie 2, which was released in 2001. Number 6 has a lot of hype with the return, and it’s promised to go back to its roots in offensive, raunchy comedy.
The History of the Franchise
If you were in middle or high school in the late 90s or early 00s, Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 were the s***! This was one of those movies that, as a young teen, you would give a little white lie to your parents about what you actually saw at AMC. Or maybe you and your boys went to Blockbuster to rent it for the weekend to watch in the basement of your mom’s house.
The kind of movie that has you questioning your maturity, with all the raunchy jokes. The series started off making fun of the thriller blockbuster, Scream. From the opening scene of a mix of horror sequences, some over-the-top stereotypes, and Carmen Electra running through sprinklers, the hilarious raunchiness began.
Maybe you were in the theater watching it for the first time, and someone had a big, bulky camera bootlegging that s***. Then she starts yelling at you to “get out of her face,” while on her Nokia flip phone. Regardless of your experience, the first time you watched it, you know you wish you were the one smoking with Ghostface.
You would have to be special like Doofy getting his thing stuck in the vacuum, while he was “cleaning his room,” if you didn’t think the Wayans would come back with a sequel. Most of the crew was back from the first, including Anna Faris and Regina Hall. This time time they would spend the night in a haunted house.
While it wasn’t Big Daddy Kane’s ghost haunting the house, we did get a pretty sick, Nike, And-1-type commercial. We got to see their hottest b-ball and dance skills, then got to see a giant weed plant roll up Shorty and lit that afro like the best strain of kush. After a disgusting dinner, some live-action Mario Kart-type games like wheelchair racing and boxing a cat, the kids try to survive.
After a battle with some bones and a fight with a little-handed butler, the gang was able to get out of the house. The sequel lived up to the level of the first and set the franchise up for success. After complications and disputes, the Wayans stepped away from the series.
And then it sucked! That’s it! Charlie Sheen and the gang were never as good as the original, and they just get lost in the bunch. In a Forrest Gump voice, “That’s all I got to say about that!”
Now Scary Movie 6 is back, and it looks more promising with the return of Ghostface. Also, M3GAN and “Tuesday” are featured, and it is rumored to have some Pennywise and Stranger Things references. There is also a rumor that if this one performs well, there may be sequels to Don’t Be a Menace and White Chicks.
Final Thoughts
I am really hoping that Marlon Wayans isn’t just telling us what we want to hear. The first two movies in the series were iconic films for their time. I hope number 6 will be the same, a nice throwback for us who grew up on it! So if you do get offended easily, here is some advice for you, “Run B****, RUN!”
