Haven’t seen the new animated film that has been all the craze since April Fool’s Day? Well, you may be in the minority, and like Rakim, Mario “ain’t no joke.” Around the same time, Rakim and Eric B. were playing “Follow the Leader,” there were a couple of plumber brothers trying to save a princess.
Fast forward forty years, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed over $370M at the global box office. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie is on pace to “eat a bigger mushroom” than the original in 2023. The question becomes, is it worth watching?
What’s the Sequel All About?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie starts right where the original left off. We are reminded that Bowser is still a little guy, shrunken down to a fraction of his size. He’s held captive by the brothers and Princess Peach. We were introduced to another Princess, named Rosalina, but she is quickly in trouble.
We also get introduced to the cutest creature since Baby Yoda, of course, I am talking about Bowser Jr. The son of the captive King Koopa is successful in capturing his first princess and has big plans to take over the galaxy. So, who do you call when you have a princess in distress from a Koopa?
It sure ain’t the Ghostbusters! The plumbers are back! Princess Peach gets some backstory as we learn she has a sister. More importantly, we get the new star of the series, Yoshi! The adorable dinosaur captures your heart with its cuteness. We get an ‘80s-style montage of his existence, and we instantly fall in love.
As Mario and Luigi adopt their new buddy, the quest begins. After a heel turn of a familiar foe, the brothers have their hands full to stop the Bowser clan from taking over the universe. Some help and cameo from Fox McCloud from the Star Fox franchise and the original Super Smash Bros was an exciting moment for fans.
Will Mario See a Trilogy?
There is no doubt that the series will have a third movie. Though there are no facts to back this theory up, the success of the sequel shows promise. What can fans expect? Will there be a Wario or Waluigi sighting? Most likely! Voice of Luigi, Charlie Day has already dream casted Danny Devito as the evil Wario in yellow.
Maybe we will get the ghostly chill King Boo! A giant ghost who is not as friendly as Casper. We could get a Koopa clan comeback. All I can say is that I am intrigued. Like the Sonic movie series, the Super Mario films are hitting us millennials in a beautiful, nostalgic way.
Even if we get a movie focused on Toad or Yoshi, the world will not complain. These movies are great for the kids, and for the adults who grew up with their plumber buds. No one will be shocked when the third is announced; the franchise will continue to break records like the Toy Story franchise.
Final Thoughts
So is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie worth watching? Absolutely! I am not a fan of movies with too much CGI, but in this instance, technology and animation make magic. With the technology of today, some of these nostalgic video games can come to life, larger than ever. This could become the era of the video game movies, similar to superhero movies within the past few decades.
Who knows, this could spawn spin-offs like Super Smash Bros or a Mario Kart movie. We’ve already seen Donkey Kong and Fox McCloud in the series. Who will be next? Samus or Captain Falcon? Or do we think Link will show up, and a Zelda movie? Only time will tell. “Wahoo!”
