It almost feels like 1990 all over again, which may have been the last time a highly anticipated Detroit Tigers position player had this much buildup. Back then, while listening to Public Enemy’s “Don’t Believe the Hype,” it was Travis Fryman. Fast forward thirty-six years, and the hype is real with the number two prospect in Major League Baseball set to make his debut.
There is a ton of buzz with Detroit fans around the city after the announcement that Kevin McGonigle will be wearing the old English D to start the 2026 season. The prospect should inject a spark amongst not only the team but the city and its fans as well.
What This Means for the Tigers
During spring training, all eyes were on Kevin McGonigle. The number two prospect in baseball, only behind Pittsburgh’s Konnor Griffin, is another piece of homegrown talent that could make an immediate impact! Many may question the decision of jumping from Double A to the big leagues without a stop in “The Glass City,” but McGonigle could shatter expectations.
The 21-year-old lefty hit .254 in AA Eerie last season with an OBP of .369 and an OPS of .919. In 46 games, “Run KMG” hit 12 home runs and was a mass run producer with 41 RBI. Those numbers stood out to Scott Harris, AJ Hinch, and the Tigers organization, giving the youngster an invitation to training camp.
McGonigle’s goal was to make sure the decision on his big league dreams was a tough one for the front office. He may have easily exceeded this goal, because to the rest of us it seems like a no-doubter. He managed to hit .250 with 2 home runs in spring training with many quality at-bats.
The rookie should be splitting time between shortstop and third base this season since the team still has questions about Matt Vierling, Javy Baez, and Parker Meadows. The Tigers will be relying strongly on their pitching this season, and didn’t address much of their everyday lineup in the offseason.
What Impact Will the Rookies Make?
As of right now, he is the second betting favorite in the American League behind Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage. McGonigle is believed to be a pure hitter and could make an immediate impact with the team. He should be in the opening day lineup, and third base should be his to lose.
The Tigers organization has two other prospects from the same 2023 draft class that could be welcomed to “The Show” this season. Fellow 21-year-old outfielder Max Clark and utility infielder Max Anderson could be the next ones to receive the call to live out their big league dreams.
With a pitching rotation that includes back-to-back Cy Young Winner Tarik Skubal, two-time All-Star Framber Valdez, and former Cy Young and MVP Justin Verlander returning home, the young’ns have a chance to be part of something special. The Tigers will look to make the postseason for the third year in a row. The question is, are we ready to start trusting Chris Illich and Scott Harris?
Final Thoughts
The last two seasons have proved that the city of Detroit is a better place when the Tigers are competitive. Not only should they win the weak AL Central division, but we should get a good look at our future. Skubal or not, the team has a bright future with their farm system.
The 2026 Tigers also have the chance to consistently have a lineup of all “homegrown” talent (with Baez out of the lineup), something that hasn’t really been done since the 1955 St. Louis Cardinals. Welcome to the Show, Kevin McGonigle, and welcome to the Motor City!
