5 Retro Nintendo 64 Games for the Perfect Night in with the Boys

Take yourself back to the late 90s. You just got a stack of video games from Blockbuster, a few pies from your favorite pizza place, some beverages (adult or Code Red), and your boys are on their way over. Your Friday night is all set to be one of plenty of trash talk and triumphs. The four controllers are unraveled, and the Nintendo 64 is booted up.

Now that you have the greatest “party” console set up, which games are worth playing with your friends to have bragging rights to become the next “64-bit Legend”? Here is a list of five games for the 64 that will get the s*** talking started on a great night in!

5 N64 Games to Battle Your Friends On

Super Smash Bros

The ultimate trash-talking game! Super Smash Bros is a great game for a group of friends, whether you have four players or more. Loser leaves their sticks! Everyone has their favorite character to use in the fight to the death, and their favorite fighting arena to kill their opponents.

You may be the type to fly around and come crashing down as a brick with Kerby. Or maybe you’re that annoying player dropping bombs with Link, or turning everyone into an egg with Yoshi. You could be like me, who uses Samus and charges up for the biggest shots across the board. Regardless of who you choose, get strapped with your favorite weapons and watch out for the giant hammer!

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark is a no-pun-intended, perfect first-person shooter game to get everyone riled up! Set up the game against a bunch of bots or go head-to-head to see who reigns supreme. With automatic guns with secondary options, or grenade launchers to ensure mass destruction, most kills, “king of the hill,” or capture the flag will keep you entertained for hours.

My suggestion: play with proximity mines, put those sons of b****** all over the place, and watch your friends explode. Wrong place, wrong time, sorry, not sorry, bud. If this isn’t available, Goldeneye is a great substitution.

WWF No Mercy

Wait a second, the World Wildlife Foundation had a video game? And it was called “No Mercy?” WTF! I know what you’re thinking, but for those Gen Z’ers, the WWE was once the World Wrestling Federation! No Mercy was the best wrestling game that ever came out on the Nintendo 64!

If you’re not brawling backstage or fighting yourself through the Royal Rumble, then what are you doing with your life? Who is the best at this game? Who can hit their “Special” the most and get the win? Just don’t find yourself in the ring with me because this was my jam, and I am very hard to beat!

Mario Kart 64

This one is easy and obvious! Like Super Smash Bros, everyone has their character of choice. Whether you like to be a “powerful” character like Bowser or Wario, or you like a “speedster,” like Toad or Peach, start your engines. Make sure you know all the shortcuts that are available in the courses.

If you can’t race like Ricky Bobby and you’re “not first, you’re last,” luckily, you will get help from those convenient weapon boxes. Make sure you control yourself when that lightning bolt hits and watch out for the dreaded blue shell. If races aren’t your thing, you can also “Battle.” The drinking edition is great too, but remember you have to finish your drink before the race ends, but don’t drink and drive. You have to pull over!

Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ’98

For those who love sports games, Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ’98 is perfect for 4 players. Play the fast-paced, arcade-style hockey game with plenty of scoring, fights, and bragging rights. The unrealistic style takes the seriousness out of the game and throws the outrageousness into the mix. Take yourself back to 90’s hockey, and to the players you grew up being a fan of.

The NBA Jam-style game has plenty of power-ups and advantage points for all players. Pick your favorite team, and play as some of your favorite legends as you run up the scoreboard on your friends. Who doesn’t love a fast-paced, action-packed hockey game? Grab your sticks!

Final Thoughts

Now, message that group chat, make some plans for Friday or Saturday night, dust off the Nintendo 64, or get yourself a nice emulator. Hopefully, you enjoyed the list I compiled. If you have your own favorites, add them to it. Even though I never owned a 64 as a kid, I am still a 64 Bit Legend to the core.
