Lions’ Shuffle Deck by Granting Left Tackle’s Wish

The Detroit Lions’ front office remains busy with free agency right around the corner. A few days after trading their second-favorite video game character, Knuckles, the longest tenured member of the roster asked for his release. This comes as somewhat of a surprise to the fans, but the Lions’ organization may have seen this coming.

Taylor Decker, a ten-year veteran who spent his entire career in the Motor City, contemplated retirement in the offseason. When he made his return to the team, he was asked to restructure his contract to open up more cap space for free agency spending. When the left tackle got the news, he simply asked for his release.

How the Lions Should Fill the Role

It’s been a long time since the Detroit Lions had question marks at left tackle. In 2016, with the sixteenth pick, they selected a young man out of “Thee Ohio State University.” Even though there are harsh feelings toward the state directly south of Michigan, Taylor Decker was welcomed with open arms.

The Lions were lucky to have consistency out of Decker for a decade, including one Pro Bowl appearance in 2024. So now what? Where will they ever find another quality Left Tackle? Well, they may not have to look too far. They should have the answer in their own locker room.

There’s one big Samoan on the other side of the line that protects our guy pretty well. We’re not talking about the security guard in You, Me, and Dupree, even though he may have more than “seven different kinds of smoke,” we’re talking about Penei Sewell.

Sewell is arguably the best offensive lineman in the entire National Football League and a future Hall of Famer. He has experience at LT, and he is the best option to protect our Ryan Gosling, Jared Goff. We are already paying the man like he plays the position, and it will be much easier to fill the right side.

How Will this Affect the 2026 Season

Decker may never be one hundred percent healthy in his last couple of seasons in the league. This could have been one of the best things to happen to the Lions in the offseason. The team has opened up over ten million dollars in cap space. For a team that needs to fill a lot of holes, “show me the money!”

First and foremost, they must address the offensive line. Assuming they will move Sewell over to LT, the team must now address the RT position. Either through free agency or the draft, we need to solidify that spot. And please find a center! Enough of rotating them around more than the Tigers’ pitchers.

The team needs to get back to having a dominant offensive line! That was their identity, and they were “GR-R-REAT!” Goff was at his best, Gibbs was at his best, and the offense was electric! Hopefully, it wasn’t all Ben Johnson, but it’s not looking good.

The money saved from Decker also allows the team to possibly fill some holes on the defense. It’s a Lions’ fans’ wet dream to get an edge rusher opposite of Hutch. Am I right? They also need to address their defensive back situation. Brian Branch will miss significant time in 2026, and Kerby Joseph is a huge question mark. Along with very questionable cornerbacks, fans may have some serious concerns.

Final Thoughts

The Lions and Brad Holmes have a huge offseason in front of them. With missing the playoffs and two fan favorites leaving, the team must bounce back in a big way. There are a lot of positions this team needs to fill, and they may look very different in 2026. The core players and system are still in place, and with a fourth-place schedule, they should be back in the playoff hunt. But is their Super Bowl window closing?
